ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS

Details:                 This course was mainly twelve months practical training in C programming and UNIX operation.  A major component was a four-month full-time software development project where I produced a network-based (TCP/IP) multi-user "real-time discussion facility" server, programmed in C, to run on the Internet via a UNIX system.  My software has been distributed for use by various universities.  The course also included: normalisation to develop an INGRES relational database and use of SQL; C++; Software Engineering using CASE tool in Apple Mac environment; Internet applications (telnet, ftp, e-mail, World Wide Web).

Details:                 Course included a one-year industrial placement at IBM UK Ltd.  The placement gave rise to my career choice in computing.  The course also included: computer programming assignments in BASIC and FORTRAN-77; Medusa Computer Aided Design (CAD) and AutoCAD; familiarisation with Sun-OS and Novell Netware for general computer use.

CURRENT EMPLOYMENT

 

Job Title:               Software Development Engineer

Employer:              Dictaphone International, Hammersmith, London.

Employer:              Currently outsourced to Morgan Stanley, Canary Warf, London.

Duties:                   The chief role of this position is to develop telephony interface modules for our Symphony and daVinci voice recording and retrieval systems.  I produced Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) software using Microsoft Visual C++ version 5 to interface with switches including those by Aspect, Northern Telecom (Meridian), Mitel (SX2000), Ericsson (MD110) and IPC Tradenet.  Customers using my software include Morgan Stanley, Charles Schwab, Trusthouse Forte Hotels, AOL and Direkt Anlage Bank (Germany).  I also produce utilities for our Boomerang dictation and Harmony voice recording and retrieval products, using Visual Basic version 5 and ActiveX controls.  I am involved with implementing the company's Internet web-site using HTML, Java scripting, Macromedia Flash 5 and ASP version 3.0.  Responsibilities also include software test planning and field support.  This area has gained me the vast knowledge of computer telephony integration (CTI) protocols via RS232 and Ethernet (TCP/IP) for PABXs.  The job has also allowed me to gain experience in the use of SQL Plus, Oracle database, Windows NT 4, MS Visual Source Safe.  My commitment is demonstrated by my willingness to work outside contracted hours and to learn quickly the use of new application software to get tasks done.

Job Title:        Analyst Programmer

Employer:       Siemens Databit Ltd, Purley, Surrey.

Dates:              February 1995 - April 1998

Duties:            Development and maintenance of the CLAIRE call-logging software products, using C and Visual Basic.  Responsibilities also include test planning and field support.  My chief role has been to produce a wide range of real-time data collection interfaces to ensure compatibility of our call loggers with a variety of telephone switches.  This area has gained me the vast knowledge of computer telephony integration (CTI) protocols via RS232 and Ethernet (TCP/IP) for PABXs.  I am also responsible for developing many database import and update utilities.  The job has allowed me to gain experience in Microsoft Visual C++, MS Visual Basic versions 3 and 4, maintaining MS Access database and use of SQL, Windows NT, Windows 95, OS9 and OS9000 operating systems, Concurrent and Novell Multi-user DOS, source-code version control utilities such as SMS and VCS.

 

Job Title:        IT Project Assistant

Employer:       The Medical Centre, Walthamstow, London.

Dates:              April 1994 - February 1995

Duties:            I was involved in the Novell PC network installation and administration to aid Practice management.  I have assisted in installation of similar LANs (running Novell Netware versions 2.2 and 3.12) at other local surgeries.  My work also involved training the staff in computer operation (including DOS, Windows and Wordperfect) and liasing with various computer supply firms.

Job Title:        Software Programmer

Dates:              December 1993 - April 1994

Duties:            Short-term contract.  I designed, programmed and documented a stock intake/sales recording software for the shop.  My application was produced using Borland Turbo C++.  The work also involved training the staff on using the software.  This employment provided me valuable experience in understanding the customer's needs in order to produce the software to suit him.

 

Employer:       British Gas plc., Watson House Research & Development Station, Fulham, London.

Job Title:        Part-time Researcher

Duties:            I was selected by my university to take this work for the company's environmental and pollution concern.  The work was developed into my final year B.Eng project.  It was good experience in working to a tight deadline whilst under pressure by prevailing university assignments.

Job Title:        Manufacturing Engineer - full-time industrial placement during third year of B.Eng course.

Duties:            This employment provided me excellent exposure to IT in an industrial environment.  I was responsible for the smooth running of on-site production process plants.  The work included using Generic CAD for designing machine parts and producing process diagrams, programming Witness simulation software to produce animated models of on-site processes; Use of Lotus 123 spreadsheet for producing production-rate prediction tables; BASIC programming for producing calculation tables; modifying and documenting processes; supervising and training staff on machine operation.

 

 

ACTIVITIES AND POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY

 

University:     Voluntary Computer Centre Supervisor:  Helping students in use of Microsoft Office, DOS, Windows for Workgroups, Sun-OS UNIX, Linux and Internet.

                         Class Representative:  Attended course committee meetings with lecturers and discussed problem areas on behalf of the class.  Position held throughout B.Eng and M.Sc.

                         President of Chemical Engineering Society:  Organised departmental activities; represented the society at Student Union meetings (negotiating budgets, etc).

                         Committee Member of Live Action Wargames Society:  Organised university "paintball" activities in association with the British Battlegames Federation.  Took part in many games against other colleges.

                         Parachuting Club:  Completed basic training and achieved jumps.

 

School:            Army Cadet Force:  Reached rank of Corporal.  Attended all annual camps, including two weeks training at a NATO base in Germany, and adventurous training activities (rock-climbing, hiking, abseiling).  Obtained marksmanship qualification.  I was responsible for training new recruits.

                         Computer Club:  Became skilled programmer in BASIC since 1981.  Supervised and helped other pupils.  Programmed scientific simulations for school open days.
